“Everywhere I have travelled plants have surprised me by their dogged loyalty to place, even to the point of defining genius loci, and then by their fickle abandonment of home comforts to become vagrant opportunists. Plants, looked at like this, raise questions about life’s constraints and possibilities - the boundaries of the individual, the nature of aging, the significance of scale, the purpose of beauty - that seem to illuminate the processes and paradoxes of our own lives.”
Paul Robbins brings a fresh and distinctive approach and sensibility to defining and creating a garden scene.
With over 30 years of experience and a transatlantic repertoire, Robbins’ landscape design is infused with a wealth of connoisseurship and elegant imagination garnered from his diverse private home, hotel and restaurant projects. His collaborations with architects, interior designers, horticulturalists and other experts have born gardens successfully from Napa Valley, Aspen, New York and Maine through to England’s home counties, the Cotswolds and London.
His portfolio of work in Southern California ranges from private clients including Gary Oldman, Gwyneth Paltrow, Ringo Starr to the heritage estates of Marilyn Monroe, Orson Wells and Mary Pickford and the Hollywood corporate dynasty extending to the CEOs of Paramount, Sony and Marvel.
The understated design of ‘outdoor rooms’ plays to Robbins’ particular strengths. Together with his horticultural training, he brings strong spatial design skills and years of know-how with installation work, planting mature trees, re-modeling and designing swimming pools, stone-work and garden lighting.
